Dr. Satish Narula The Man Behind The Green Canvas
Dr. Satish Narula, a retired senior horticulturist from Punjab Agricultural University ( PAU) and former consultant advisor on theme gardens, Union Territory, Chandigarh - has carved for himself a niche as the Garden Man and an authority in matters of agriculture/ horticulture, landscaping and gardening. He has contributed about 2000 write ups on horticulture in various English dailies like Indian Express, Hindustan Times, The Tribune and Dainik Bhaskar benefiting millions of gardeners and farmers.
Popularly known as Dr Green and Green Guru of Chandigarh, the Horticulture Extension Specialist has been involved in the Maintaining of the green character of the city beautiful that is known to be the Greenest City of Asia.
As a member of Chandigarh Landscape Committee and Chandigarh Greening Task Force, he has given a new dimension to the Chandigarh City Gardens that are Conceptualized and Designed by him. He also helped in the execution of the work in various gardens. These have been designed on unique themes keeping Education, Recreation and Tourism in mind. He has the distinction of re-designing and refurbishing of Asia's biggest Rose Garden in Chandigarh. Dr. Narula has also conceptualized and designed several gardens of note in the Northern region of India including Chandigarh Botanical Garden on 180 acres with which project he was associated from the day one where he developed new concept Lotus Design Aquatic Plants garden, Cactus Garden (with 60 feet diameter poly carb house with exotic coloured cacti) and Japanese Garden. These gardens have become important landmarks and attract tourists from all over the world. Further, he has the distinction of redesigning and beautification of Jallianwala Bagh, recreating history with plants. He also designed the Borlaug Institute of South Asia, an international institute at Ludhiana. Work on various gardens designred by him like Palm and Cycas Garden, Japanese Garden, Conifers Garden, Valley of Animals, beautification of Chandigarh Sukhna Lake and plant planning in Garden of Silence at the other end of Sukhna Lake etc are in progress in Chandigarh. He was Consultant Advisor to Pushpa Gujral Science City (70 acre project) at Kapurthala. He was invited by the University of Horticulture and Forestry at Solan and HPKVV, Palampur for campus landscape planning. He was also a member of Landscape Committee of Punjab Agriculture University at Ludhiana.
He was the Chairman to Committee formed by Punjab Government to Evaluate Citrus Varieties Imported from USA for cultivation in Punjab by Citrus Council.
He had the rare honour of developing a nutrition garden and a spiritual garden at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi as desired by Dr A P J Abdul Kalam the then President of India. He contributed inputs for the improvement in the famous Mughal Garden at Rashtrapati Bhawan that were accepted. He also designed and created a Herbal Garden at the residence of the then Vice President of India, Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.Dr. Narula is a board member on several high profile committees and adviser on others. He has written several books on horticulture/ agriculture and gardens.
He has over the years contributed about 2000 write ups on horticulture in various English dailies like Indian Express, Hindustan Times, The Tribune and Dainik Bhaskar benefiting millions of gardeners and farmers.
He is the winner of multiple state/ national awards and accolades including State Commendation award and Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the field of Horticulture and Gardens.
